WellSpan Health Breaks Ground on Newberry Township Hospital

Facility to provide 24/7 hospital services to underserved residents of northern York County

YORK, Pa. (July 11, 2024) – Meeting the demand for hospital-level care in a part of the region currently underserved, WellSpan Health, the leading healthcare provider in York County and Emerus, the nation’s leading developer of small-format hospitals, have broken ground on a state-of-the-art hospital in Newberry Township.

“Establishing a hospital in northern York County is just one of the ways WellSpan Health is improving the health of the communities we serve.  We are brining 24/7 emergency and inpatient care with short wait times and onsite diagnostics, so community members no longer must travel to York or Harrisburg for high quality care. Our commitment to reimaging care includes ensuring we improve access to care and healthcare resources,” said Victoria Diamond, senior vice president of WellSpan Health’s Central Region.

Vic Schmerbeck, CEO of Emerus, said, “We are proud to partner with WellSpan, one of the nation’s leading hospital systems. We’re excited to help bring sustainable, compassionate, high-quality health care that will meet the needs of Pennsylvanians, now, and in the future.”

Newberry Groundbreaking

The hospital will be located at 36 Robinhood Drive in Newberry Township, just off busy Interstate 83 and adjacent to a number of businesses and growing residential areas. It will include an emergency department as well as 10 inpatient beds in a smaller, more accessible footprint than traditional hospitals while still operating 24/7, 365 days a year. It is the one of three new hospitals WellSpan is building over the next two years, including facilities near Shrewsbury and another near Carlisle, all of which are projected to open in late 2025.

The improved access to care and wide range of services streamlined in a smaller setting should greatly improve the patient experience. Small-format hospitals are able to see, treat and discharge patients in far less time, on average, than traditional larger hospitals, without a reduction in services or quality.

“At WellSpan, we are dedicated to simplifying access to healthcare, and our hospital design prioritizes convenience. We aim to change the entire experience of emergency and hospital-based care and are excited to introduce a new, enhanced approach in Newberry Township,” said Dr. David Vega, senior vice president and chief medical officer, WellSpan Health.

In addition to inpatient and emergency care, WellSpan Newberry Hospital will provide diagnostic capabilities including ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), X-ray and laboratory services. The emergency department will treat common emergency care needs such as falls, injuries, burns and infections.
