Marking a key milestone in the development of the new small-format hospital being built in Westmoreland County, construction crews on Wednesday will lift into place the final steel beam at AHN Hempfield – Neighborhood Hospital. The hospital is expected to open its doors later this year.
The nearly 79,000-square-foot facility – located at 6321 Route 30, Greensburg, PA 15601 – is one of four neighborhood hospitals Allegheny Health Network is building across western Pennsylvania as part of its $1 billion investment to expand access to convenient, close-to-home emergency care. Other locations for the small-format hospitals include Brentwood, Harmar, and McCandless.
AHN is partnering with Texas-based Emerus, the nation’s leading developer and operator of neighborhood hospitals, to build and manage the new facilities. Pittsburgh-based Rycon Construction is leading the construction of the hospitals.
Unlike standalone emergency departments or urgent care centers, AHN Hempfield will be a fully licensed small-format hospital that is open 24/7. In addition to an emergency department and 10-bed inpatient unit, AHN Hempfield will provide diagnostic imaging, as well as laboratory and other complementary medical services. It will be staffed by board-certified physicians, nurses, and other experienced health care professionals, all of whom are aligned around a high-quality care model.
Among numerous patient-friendly design elements, AHN Hempfield will feature nursing stations uniquely configured to maximize sightlines and accessibility, allowing staff to easily monitor exam rooms and minimize response times. CT and X-ray procedure rooms will accommodate patients of any age, with adjacent observation rooms that keep families together during procedures. An onsite lab will expedite testing processes so patients don’t have to wait long for results.
AHN Hempfield also will house an adjoining AHN community cancer center. AHN Cancer Institute—Hempfield will be the fifth community cancer center AHN expects to open in 2019, joining others in Monroeville, Erie, Butler, and Beaver County that offer a range of services, including diagnostic labs and imaging, medical oncology and infusion therapy, and radiation oncology.
