Baptist Neighborhood Hospital to be unveiled July 23
(San Antonio) – Residents on San Antonio’s East Side will soon have a new option when it comes to emergency care close to home. The newest Baptist Neighborhood Hospital, located at 2111 S.E. Loop 410 at Rigsby Ave., will be unveiled to the community during a celebration at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 23.
East Side community leaders, including members of SAGE (San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside), will join Baptist Health System staff as they debut the modern hospital that offers patients:
- 11,000-square-foot Emergency Department for all types of emergency care
- 11 examination rooms
- Nursing stations staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
- Staff of emergency medicine physicians, experienced nurses and clinical specialists
- Radiology services — CT and X-ray and ultrasound procedures
- In-house lab services that allow expedited results. Standard tests can be run such as pregnancy, strep throat, CBC panels, EKG and cardiac enzyme analysis, liver panel, metabolic profiles and urinalysis
- Adult and pediatric advanced cardiac life support, EKG and thrombolytic therapy for acute heart attack
- Ambulance arrivals accepted
The new hospital will officially open its doors and begin taking patients on Monday, July 28.
Bill Waechter, Market CEO for Baptist Health System, said building on the East Side was the right decision at the right time for patients. “The new hospital expands access to high-quality emergency health care to residents in the greater East Side community,” Waechter said.
The East Side population is growing. The area includes several historic neighborhoods such as Dignowity Hill, one of San Antonio’s oldest. It encompasses the Salado Creek Greenway and hosts large crowds at venues such as the AT&T Center and Freeman Coliseum. Children in the area attend some of the major school districts, including San Antonio ISD, East Central ISD and parts of Judson ISD.
“In an emergency, every minute counts,” Waechter said. “Our Baptist Neighborhood Hospital-Rigsby will also provide a safety net if high patient volumes fluctuate at other ERs in the area and create capacity issues,” he said. “We are proud to serve the East Side with timely, compassionate care that could save lives. The convenience of being in the neighborhood also seamlessly connects patients to the broader, more specialized services our system of Baptist hospitals across the city can provide,” he said.
The new acute care facility is a joint-venture partnership between Baptist Health System and Emerus, the nation’s leader in building and operating small-format hospitals. Baptist Neighborhood Hospitals offer similar service lines as traditional hospitals, but with a smaller footprint.
The Baptist Neighborhood Hospital-Rigsby is Baptist Health System’s 10th neighborhood hospital built in partnership with Emerus. Baptist Neighborhood Hospitals began serving San Antonio patients in 2011, when the first location opened on the South Side. Today, the network includes hospitals in Westover Hills, Kelly, Schertz, Thousand Oaks, Hausman, Overlook and Zarzamora, as well as emergency departments in Shavano Park and Converse.
Vic Schmerbeck, CEO of Emerus, credits Baptist Health System leadership and its teams for the success of the health care model, which Emerus created and launched in 2006.
“We are excited to again combine our experience with the medical expertise and commitment to excellence we share with the Baptist Health System,” he said. “We are great partners in a shared vision of providing the right care at the right time – at the right place and at the right cost.”
