I often speak about our organization as being a family.

As strongly as I believe in that vision, it has no real meaning unless all of us who make health care a calling share that belief and take pride in it.

I am tremendously pleased to announce the results of our annual mini engagement survey – The Pulse Check – reveal that family, culture and teamwork are the three traits cited most frequently by our employees as their “favorite thing” about working for Emerus. Ranking fourth is facility, meaning our employees have a great deal of pride and satisfaction in their work environment and work atmosphere.

In sharing these results with you, I’d like to provide a bit of context. The Pulse Check, which is completed anonymously, is a follow-up to the annual Great Place to Work (GPTW) survey. It examines areas Emerus leadership and Human Resources have identified as needing improvement or change. Therefore, scores should always be lower than results of the GPTW survey.

Indeed, Pulse Check scores for categories examining credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie are slightly lower than those of the GPTW survey. But, the overall Pulse Check score asking if Emerus is a great place to work is 87, just one point below the organization’s goal of 88 – the percentage that qualifies a company for designation as a Great Place to Work and for eligibility on the listing of Top 100 Hospitals.

We’re working hard to implement further organizational improvements to address areas where employees have expressed concern, such as accountability, fiscal awareness and safety –challenges all companies face. We’re also exploring new training options, and several other options to improve job satisfaction, based on staff suggestions.

So, thank you for your continuing participation in these surveys. Your comments are valued and appreciated, and they help us grow and improve.

Finally, I’d like to salute the hard work and dedication of our Tomball, Emerus Community Hospital, which is the recipient of the 2016 Guardian of Excellence Award for Patient Experience in the Emergency Department. The Guardian of Excellence Award honors clients who have reached the 95th percentile for patient experience, engagement or clinical quality performance.

While we must keep the news internal until the formal announcement at the Awards Recognition Lunch on Nov. 3, this is an achievement of which we can all be proud and aspire toward. While this is just another example of our clinical team taking care of business, it is my hope and expectation that we can continue to prove our style of care is a winner!
