Rebecca Schwanenberg

Clincal Educator/RN – Baptist Emergency Hospital

How long have you worked here?
I have been employed at Emerus since January 2012. I started as an ER RN at BEH Thousand Oaks, and in October 2015 became a clinical educator for the San Antonio Region.

Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I spent my summers while attending college working for a plastics factory, where I produced post-mortem bags (aka body bags).

What is your proudest moment or experience treating our patients?
I had the pleasure of providing care for a 6-year-old boy who had gone through a lot of medical procedures. His past experiences in hospitals made him nervous about getting an IV placed. I prepped him for the procedure and reassured him that everything would be ok. He was screaming and crying all the way up until I stuck him with the IV, which was obtained in only one stick. He immediately quit crying and asked, “Are you done already?” I let him know it was all finished, to which he responded, “Wow – you must be an old nurse!” His parents were horrified, but I just laughed and hugged him. I did recommend that he tell other “old nurses” they are experienced instead of old, and we all laughed. As I was exiting the room, he called out to me and said “thank you Ms. Experienced Nurse!”Needless to say, this encounter gave me a smile for the rest of the day.

What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?
Watch all three of my kids grow up and lead a faith-filled, happy life, visit Ireland and drive down Hwy 61 in Minnesota between Red Wing and Winona during the fall, which I have done before, but would like to do again.

What are your top 3 life highlights?
Marrying the love of my life, Paul, the birth of my three children and winning the 2014 Employee Excellence award.

If you could be anyone from any time period, who would it be and why?
I would be my sister, Deb, so I could live life as a completely selfless, humble person who is always looking out for others.

Favorite national observance/why?
Christmas, because it’s the observance of Jesus, and a time to recognize that we should always treat others with the same kindness and mercy He has shown us.

Favorite medicine-based movie or show/why?
The Awakening. I loved the doctor’s spirit of never giving up and the joy his patients experienced, though it was only for a short time.
