Patient Access Specialist –
Baylor Emergency Medical Centers at Colleyville
How long have you worked here?
I have been employed with Emerus since October 2012. I started at the Aubrey location, but transferred to the Colleyville facility July 2015.
Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
Prior to entering a hospital environment, I worked as a legal assistant for the Drinnon law firm in Dallas. Becoming a public Notary, organizing weekly meetings and assisting a civil litigation lawyer was very rewarding, challenging and insightful to me.
What is your proudest moment or experience treating our patients?
I have proud moments every day, but a particular moment that stands out occurred when I was working night shift at Aubrey, and we had a woman come in who coded. As our clinical staff raced over to start CPR, the husband ran out of the room, panicking as the curtain closed. I was able to catch him in the hallway. After shutting the other patient’s door, I let him know our staff would give him an update as soon as possible and promised to keep an eye on his wife while my team worked to save her life. I was standing with the husband near our nurse’s station while he asked me all sorts of questions about his wife’s care, our hospital, and about what I do. After answering his questions to the best of my ability, he grabbed my hand and asked me to pray with him, which I did without hesitation. I was raised as a Christian and firmly believe in the power of prayer. In that moment, I felt proud – I was not BLS/CPR-certified yet, I had hardly any clinical background and was fairly new to the health care industry but, here I was, “coordinating” the entire ED alongside an amazing night shift crew. I felt proud because I was able to be there for him and offer support when he needed it most. There are so many moments I can say I am proud of myself, but I am most proud when I can do something great for our patients and their loved ones.

What is your dream vacation?

If you could be anyone from any time period, who would it be and why?
I would love to have lived part of Princess Diana’s life. She was a beautiful woman, born into royalty, but spent her young adulthood doing charity work, raising money for cancer research and participating in so many other philanthropic efforts.
Favorite national observance/why?
Fourth of July is my favorite! I have so many wonderful memories of fireworks on the golf course and cookouts by the pool with my family. It’s a very important holiday, and one that I look forward to each year.
Favorite medicine-based movie or show/why?
I have watched every episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” to date, and I love it! “Grey’s Anatomy” encompasses all aspects one would “expect” from a hospital – fast-paced medicine, relationships and drama between coworkers, corporate versus clinical tales, suspense and comfort in patient stories, staff members bonding and tears for every occasion. That’s what makes Grey’s Anatomy, and I am definitely hooked!
Complete this sentence about what your hospital brings to the community, or what you love about your hospital:
My hospital puts patient care first, and works together like a family. Integrity, empathy and excellence are the building blocks of this company, and our Colleyville facility looks out for the community by always being friendly, always ready to serve and always here when they need us most. This facility is my home away from home! No matter how busy we are, our staff will always make you feel like you are the only one in the building. Baylor at Colleyville sponsors many community organizations, gives free flu shots during season, participates in local groups and is always trying to educate our patients on continued health. For me, this is not just a career or where I see myself in five to 15 years, but it is my pride and joy to be a part of a company whose core values shine across every facility in every community.
