Cortney Tennison

Patient Access Manager – Baylor Emergency Medical Centers at Keller

How long have you worked here?
I’ve worked here since November 2013.

Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
In all honesty, this is probably the most interesting job I have ever had! I worked at a children’s clothing store in high school and college, then worked at a freestanding ER for 10 years. I left in 2013 and have been here ever since. Working at the freestanding ER, we saw a LOT of urgent care-type patients. Here at the hospital, there is such a variety of patients – we literally have no idea what will come through our doors next.

What is your proudest moment or experience treating our patients?
A father brought his 2-year-old daughter in, and was very frantic because he thought she was having a seizure. The sweet little girl vomited in the waiting room. When that happened, the fear in her dad’s eyes just broke my heart. Later, I heard the patient crying as they attempted to start an IV, and tears began to fill my eyes. At the time, my daughter was the same age as that little girl, and all I could think was, “What if this happened to my daughter?” A few weeks later, the father sent us a letter to show how much he appreciated everyone at the facility. Receiving letters from patients makes me so proud! That was such a tough thing to see, but knowing we helped that little girl really made me smile.

What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?
1st convincing my husband to go out of the country with me anywhere, really.
2nd get a puppy.
3rd move to a bigger house.

What is your hidden talent, hobby or greatest interest outside of work?
I’m a simple person but, currently, I LOVE gardening. I’m growing cucumbers, strawberries and sweet peppers, and I care for those plants like I do my own kids!

What are your top 3 life highlights?
First would definitely be the day I got married! Second, the entire experience of giving birth. The whole day of craziness was something I will ALWAYS remember. Last, I would like to think one day it will be the day I retire.

What is your dream vacation?
Take my kids to Disney World.

If you could be anyone from any time period, who would it be and why?
I would probably be a princess to experience what living like royalty feels like.

Favorite national observance/why?
Fourth of July! Because… well, why not?! Fireworks, pools, hot dogs, family and friends – can’t get any better.

Favorite medicine-based movie or show/why?
I don’t watch a lot of TV, but my favorite show growing up was “Rescue 911.” I loved it so much that I wouldn’t join Girl Scouts simply because they met on Tuesday nights, which was the same night my show was on. They’re all reenactments, but I love to see people getting rescued after horrible accidents. Even more so, I love seeing the “real” victim speak at the end about how thankful they are for the EMS crew, doctors, nurses, etc., who helped them.

Complete this sentence about what your hospital brings to the community, or what you love about your hospital:
“My hospital…”

My hospital brings compassion to the community. We truly want to help people, and it shows in the Keller community. We had a booth at Keller Fest a couple of weeks ago, and SEVERAL patients came up to me to share their stories of visits at our facility. They all talked about how we took such great care of them and really seemed to care about them. It definitely makes me proud to work for such an amazing company.
