Patient Access Manager –
Baylor Emergency Medical Centers at Mansfield
How long have you worked here?
July will mark my second year at Baylor Emergency Medical Centers. I started out as a PRN patient access specialist, and seven months later I was brought on full time. Now, I’ll be moving to Colorado, where I have accepted a position as patient access manager at the Emerus/SCL Health Community Hospital Westminster and Northglenn facilities.
Before working here, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
Previously, I spent five years as a color guard director in Garland ISD. I designed and taught dance and spin techniques for field shows, competitions and parades. I really enjoyed watching my students transform into outstanding performers and young adults.
What is your proudest moment or experience treating our patients?
Patient interaction is what I love most about my job. I love helping parents entertain their children by giving them coloring sheets, toys and stickers. I enjoy educating patients on their insurance benefits. In those instances when patients are unhappy about their visit, I enjoy listening so that we can try to come up with a solution before they leave, in hopes that they will remember something good about their time with us.
What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?
Travel to Europe. Open a Christmas store in a small, adorable town. Learn a new language.
What is your hidden talent, hobby or greatest interest outside of work?
I love country dancing, which is how I met my husband. Though I am not a fast runner, I really enjoy running! My greatest interest outside of work is spending time with my family and friends.
What are your top 3 life highlights?
Marrying my husband. Becoming an aunt. Moving to Colorado.
What is your dream vacation?
Backpack across Europe for an entire summer.
If you could be anyone from any time period, who would it be and why?
Audrey Hepburn. In addition to her beauty and elegance, she co-starred with some of the greatest actors and put her fame to good use later in life when she became a UNICEF Ambassador.
Favorite national observance/why?
Suicide Prevention Day (Sept. 10). I’m not sure it’s proper to say this is my “favorite” observance, but I do feel strongly about spreading awareness on the topic. Suicide is something that needs to be discussed just as we would any other public health issue. As a community, we have a responsibility to connect, identify and support those at risk.
Favorite medicine-based movie or show/why?
“Patch Adams.” For those in medical professions, it’s easy to become jaded. At times, we’re so wrapped up in treating illnesses that we can forget there are actual people behind the illness. Patch treated the person first, because treating the soul with a laugh or two can help lessen the pain and suffering.
